The Reading Scripture Well Series

Don't just read Scripture. Engage it.

You've been told to read your Bible. But odds are, nobody ever taught you what to do with what you read. The ENGAGE Method is a simple, repeatable way for everyday believers to understand a passage faithfully, live it honestly, and share it clearly.

The gap

Reading was never the destination.

You can own three Bibles, follow a reading plan, and hear a sermon every week — and still freeze when an ordinary Tuesday asks a question the sermon didn't answer. That's not a discipline problem. It's a training problem: most of us were handed a Bible and told to read it, but never shown how to move from reading to understanding to actually living what it teaches.

Engaging Scripture Well exists to close that gap — not by giving you more answers, but by teaching you a way to find them in the text yourself.

Understand the text→Believe the truth→Obey by grace→Share the hope

"But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves."

James 1:22 · WEB

The honest confession this project starts from

"We can read the Bible without actually understanding what we're reading." If that stings a little, you're exactly who this was made for.

The ENGAGE Method

Six steps. One faithful movement.

One word — ENGAGE — carries the whole method. Each letter is a step, each step is a question, and together they walk you from "what does this passage say?" all the way to "what do I do with it, and how would I explain it to someone else?"

E
STEP 1

Examine the passage

Study what the text says and how it functions in context — author, audience, setting, flow.

Ask: What does this passage actually say?
N
STEP 2

Name the timeless truth

State the passage's central truth in clear, faithful language — before you make it about you.

Ask: What is this passage teaching?
G
STEP 3

Gather biblical references

Let nearby and related passages clarify, confirm, or qualify your understanding. Scripture interprets Scripture.

Ask: How does the rest of the Bible speak to this?
A
STEP 4

Assess your life honestly

Bring your beliefs, desires, habits, relationships, and decisions under the truth — your life, not someone else's.

Ask: Where does this truth meet my actual life?
G
STEP 5

Go in faithful obedience

Choose one specific response, trusting God's grace and the Spirit's help — obedience, not self-improvement.

Ask: What will I do about it this week?
E
STEP 6

Explain the truth clearly

Practice sharing what Scripture teaches, how it is shaping you, and how it connects to the good news of Jesus.

Ask: Could I share this with someone else?

The shift

From Bible reader to biblical thinker.

"I read the Bible, but I'm not sure I understand it."
→
"I have a process for approaching Scripture."
"I don't know how to apply what I read."
→
"I can see where Scripture speaks into my actual life."
"I rely on someone else to explain the Bible."
→
"I know how to investigate Scripture for myself."
"I know Bible verses."
→
"I am learning to think biblically."

That last line is the whole project. Not more Bible knowledge — Bible-shaped thinking that holds up in real decisions, real relationships, and real conversations.

The workbook

Twelve pages you'll actually finish.

This isn't a 300-page commitment you'll abandon in February. It's a focused, beautifully designed workbook that teaches the method by walking you through it — one real passage, six guided movements, and room to be honest.

  • One passage carried through all six ENGAGE steps
  • Seven worked examples — one for every major biblical genre
  • Five application lenses: mind, heart, hands, relationships, witness
  • Scripture lists for everyday issues, journal pages, and a plan you'll keep
